I was watching the television program, Grey’s Anatomy, a couple weeks ago. In this episode the character known as Dr. Grey, a young intern in a hospital, found herself holding a human heart in her hands during a surgical procedure. She was so taken by the awesome privilege and responsibility of holding this woman’s heart that she clutched it a bit too tightly, inadvertently damaging it.

It occurred to me that we often find ourselves holding a heart in our hands – either our own as we offer it to another, or another’s that has been entrusted to us.

Holding a heart, whether it be literally or figuratively, is an awesome privilege and responsibility. The heart is not likely to be stenciled with the words “fragile, handle with care” but just remember that it is, and use the greatest care with it.

Gently touch a heart this week.
