Grandfather took me to a fish pond when I was about seven, and he told me to throw a stone into the water. He said, “Pay close attention to the the circles created by the stone.” Then he asked me to think of myself as a stone person.

“You will create lots of splashes on the universal pond of life,” he said, “and the waves created by those splashes will disturb the peace of Mother Earth and all her creatures.”

“Remember always that you are responsible for the circles you makeyour circles will also touch many other circles. It is best to live in a way that allows the good that comes from your circles to send the peace of that goodness to others. Also remember that the splash which comes from anger or jealousy will send ripples of those feelings to other circles. You are responsible for both.”

Dear Hearts,

No matter what our name, our lifestyle, history, or our intention, everything we do creates a splash on the earth plane of life. Every tear of joy or sorrow caused by our actions has made a difference in the lives of others, and in turn affected, in one way or another, the lives of people they encounter. Each stone we move, whether or not it is thrown at an enemy, or set into a wall of a cathedral, affects the world around us.

As long as we are making ripples quite by accident, why not be deliberate and make waves on purpose? Why not go out and create great swells of joy, and love, and kindness wherever we go? Ever hear of the “Butterfly Effect”? It claims that “When a butterfly flaps its wings in one part of the world the weather changes on the opposite side. If butterflies can change the world, why not you and I?
