Music, laughter, a child’s surprise,
In your eyes, in your eyes

Magic, moonbeams, a morning sunrise,

It’s with wonder I come to recognize

Dear Hearts,

The lovely poem above was written by Sharon Rose, a participant at our workshop leader certification program in New Jersey. It came to her as she was playing a piano while looking at a photo of her late grandfather. It says so much about what can be found in people’s eyes if we take the time to really look.

Until a few years ago the last thing I ever wanted to do was make eye contact with people. Any people, including myself. My self-esteem was pretty low in those days and I think I was afraid my self-opinion might be reviled through my eyes. It took a while and a bit of work but I finely trained myself to actually look people in the eyes, and oh the wonder I discovered there.

I marvel at what is just behind our eyes, the joys and sorrows of the past, and the hopes and dreams for the future. There is love and hate and fear. A whole world that is absolutely unique to each individual. Some eyes are joyful, some are angry, and some are afraid. There are eyes that are curious, desperate, lustful, and sad. Passing emotion can easily be seen at the surface of the eye. But no matter the surface conditions, like Sharon, when I look deeply and with compassion I always see God gazing back.
