INSIDE

Inside this sitting here
this mind pulling knees up close to the chest with tense hands.
Inside this movement of anxiety for the body
and its worries of money,
and its teeth grinning falsely to the solution
of all things surrounding,

Is a seed.

And the hands pressing down into the soil,
and the dreams of generations in the seed
about to wake.

Tonight I will sleep with my worries
through dreams dark with soil
and the heaving cataclysm of the spade
turning earth around me, not speaking of air

or light fused with greenness,
but of darkness and the first leaves
like hands in prayer
clasped inside the seed.

Dear Hearts,

Did you ever notice how when new leaves first sprout from a seed they often look like a pair of hands clasped in prayer?

I took a walk on Sunday morning a couple of weeks ago in preparation for a talk I was to give at a Unity Church in Buffalo, New York. I was looking for something inspirational to offer the congregation. The title of my talk was “Faith from Within.” It was a very cold morning and the ground was covered with frost. As I walked I looked around for some hint, some powerful message to deliver about faith.

After about an hour I was going to give up and just deliver the talk that I had planned originally. Then I noticed on the ground, beneath some dead, frost covered leaves, a little family of lillies pushing their delicate green leaves through the cold earth. They were actually shoving the dead leaves up and out of their way. They seemed to be saying, “We’re coming back and nothing is going to get in our way!” How’s that for message about faith?

Nature has the answers for us if we’re willing to observe and listen. Could it be that the way leaves sprout from their bulbs is a lesson to us on how to find our way back out of our own dark, cold and lonely places? Hummmmmmm.

For me, I have always found that if I am willing to have faith and ask for help, a Divine light is ignited to show me the way.
