One day the Mullah Nasrudin was on a train going to visit friends. After a while the conductor came by and said,

Mullah I need to collect your ticket.”

So Nasrudin started first looking in his wallet, then in his pant pockets, then in his luggage. Not finding his ticket there, he began looking in outer people’s luggage. After an exhaustive and unsuccessful search he started off for another car, whereupon the frustrated conductor asked,

Mullah wait, wait, wait! Where are you going?

Why, I’m going in search of my ticket! replied the desperate Nasrudin.

Why don’t you look in your inside left breast pocket? suggested the conductor, That is where most people keep that sort of thing.

Alarmed and almost in a panic Nasrudin pleaded, No, no, no! Oh no! Don’t even mention that possibility! I don’t even want to think about that!

Well Mullah, why not? asked the conductor.

Because my friend, if I look there, and it is not there, then I will have no hope!

The Mullah Nasrudin was a legendary Sufi priest (mullah means priest in Arabic) in a small village in the Middle East; his stories abound. No one knew whether he was a madman or a sage because his ways were so unconventional. As a spiritual teacher he would set himself up to look a fool so his students might, in a non threatening way, discover the fool within themselves and make the necessary corrections.

In the story above he charmingly teaches that our “tickets” to self realization, transformation and happiness are always located beneath the left breast (in our hearts). It also explains why we constantly scurry about searching desperately on the “outside”, holding our hearts as a last resort for fear that we will find them empty, leaving us with no hope at all.

Trust your heart, for it knows the way.
